Type 1 vs Type 4 Engine

You may have heard the terms thrown around — "Type 1 engine," "Type 4 engine," "did it come with the 1600 or the Type 4?", which can get confusing. Both engine types are air-cooled, and both are flat-fours (horizontally opposed pistons)...but under the skin they're quite different, and knowing which one you're dealing with is valuable information.
Here's a breakdown of what separates them.
Background
Confusion arises because Volkswagen typically uses the term "Type" to designate vehicle platforms, not engines — i.e. "Type 1" refers to the Beetle, "Type 2" to the Bus, and so on. But over time, enthusiasts adopted the same language for engines, and it stuck. When someone says "Type 1 engine," they mean the classic Beetle-derived flat-four. When they say "Type 4 engine," they mean the more advanced unit that originated in the 1968–1974 VW 411/412 sedan that was later carried over into the Bus.
The Type 1 Engine
The Type 1 is what most people picture when they think "aircooled VW engine." It's the motor that powered the Beetle from the late 1930s all the way through the end of Mexican production in the early 2000s, and it was the standard engine in the VW Bus (Type 2) through 1971.
Key characteristics:
Displacement: Originally 1100cc, but grew over the decades to 1200, 1300, 1500, and finally 1600cc.
Cooling: Air-cooled via a belt-driven fan mounted on top of the engine, with a finned sheet metal shroud directing airflow over the cylinders and heads
Lubrication: Sump oil system; oil cooler mounted inside or outside the engine tin
Valve train: Pushrod-operated, single camshaft
Construction: Magnesium crankcase with separate cast iron cylinder barrels and aluminum heads
Output: Modest — the 1600cc engine makes around 50–60 horsepower stock
The Type 1 is one of the most produced and most understood engines in automotive history. It has strength in its simplicity.
The Type 4 Engine
The Type 4 came out of VW's attempt to build a more refined, more powerful car for the early 1970s. The 411/412 sedan it debuted in wasn't a big seller, but the engine itself was more advanced than previous iterations. VW recognized this and transplanted it into the Bus beginning with the 1972 model year, where it remained through the end of Bay Window production in 1979. It also powered some Porsche 914s.
Key characteristics:
Displacement: 1700cc initially, later 1800cc and finally 2000cc
Cooling: Air-cooled, but with a significantly revised fan and shroud system compared to the Type 1
Lubrication: Available in both wet-sump and dry-sump configurations; the dry-sump version (used in some Porsche 914s) adds an external oil reservoir and pump
Valve train: Pushrod-operated but with a more robust design and better oil flow to the heads
Construction: All-aluminum case; larger, heavier
Output: The 2.0L Type 4 makes around 70 horsepower stock — modest, but noticeably more than the 1600 Type 1, and with better torque
Reputation: More complex than the Type 1, and parts can be harder to find. But a stronger, more capable engine (when cared for).

Which One Is "Better"?
It depends entirely on what you're doing with it, and what your preferences are.
For a Beetle, a Karmann Ghia, or any platform where light weight and simplicity are priorities, the Type 1 is hard to beat. The aftermarket for performance parts — big bore kits, high-lift cams, dual carb setups — is massive, and you can build a potent motor for reasonable money.
For a Bus, especially a late Bay Window or a Vanagon-era vehicle where you're carrying more weight and asking the engine to cruise at highway speeds regularly, the Type 4 is the more appropriate engine. It runs cooler, makes more power, and handles sustained load better. The trade-off is a smaller parts ecosystem and a more complex rebuild process.
One thing both engines share: they reward proper maintenance and punish neglect! Both will last a long time with the right care.
